The Estate

Like many traditional estates, Quy Hall Estate owns several farms in the surrounding countryside – as well as residential cottages, local offices and hospitality venues.

Farming

At Little Wilbraham, the Quy Hall Estate farms traditional arable crops like wheat, barley and sugar beet.

We also own a Site of Special Scientific Interest that we manage in accordance with an agreement with Natural England. This sensitive area, made up primarily of reed beds, is carefully managed to protect and promote biodiversity.

This SSSI has been identified by Cambridge Nature Network as part of a vision for expanding the Fens to the east of the city.

The Cows

The Quy Hall Estate is home to a small but growing herd of Devon Red cattle, a traditional British breed, selected for their small size, slow growth and hardy temperament. They live outside all year round, grazing in summer on the grass at our SSSI as part of our land management plan, and then coming back in winter to graze in front of Quy Hall where their calves are born.

We don't routinely use antibiotics or feed them anything additional – other than the occasional mineral lick and, over winter, a hay bale or two which we baled ourselves in local fields.

Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages for updates on beef availability; for all other cattle enquiries, contact us at meat@quyhallestate.co.uk.

We are exploring how to implement more eco-friendly regenerative farming practices on our arable land and better environmental management of our wider landholdings. If you are seeking Biodiversity Net Gain or other environment-enhancing opportunities, including those identified by the Cambridge Nature Network for our land both in Wilbraham and Quy, please contact us via our land agent.
